Blue Wheatgrass Massacre

Blue Wheatgrass Massacre

A happy accident. These three words would best describe the conception of Blue Wheatgrass Massacre. One fall afternoon after a long search for a good fiddle player in the Big Apple, singer-songwriter Joe Thompson was directed by an old friend to the talents of Sarah Hund. Upon their meeting and subsequent rehearsals, Sarah recognized Joe as a bartender in another life (this because his bloody mary’s were that good). She immediately recommended her friend and talented multi-instrumentalist, Andrew Ross, to help round out the rootsy country-rock of Joe’s live band, The Comfortable Catastrophe. Living around the corner from one another resulted in a series of mid-afternoon living room old-timey-bluegrass-country jam sessions that may or may not have involved orange juice, vodka, and a banjo-loving Chihuahua. It was during one of these glorious afternoons that “The Big Book of Rock” was discovered minding its own business on the coffee table. This would change everything. The trio realized quickly that once you have played bluegrass cuts of Megadeth, Uriah Heep, Dio, Led Zeppelin, The Doors and Steppenwolf you can never go completely back to the classic repertoire of acoustic music. Since this serendipitous afternoon, Blue Wheatgrass Massacre has entertained crowds with their bluegrass/classic rock/honky tonk/heavy metal stylings at venues throughout New York City, including Rodeo Bar and Hank’s Saloon.

Sarah Hund
Fiddle, Vocals

Sarah Hund is a singer, actress, and musician who lives in New York City. Born among the cornfields of Dodge City, Kansas, Sarah's family made the move to St. Louis, Missouri while she was still a wee little lassie. Sarah surprised her largely non-musical family by asking for a violin for Christmas at the age of 9, and luckily, they obliged. When she's not pretending to be someone else in theatres throughout the United States and New York City, she enjoys talking in silly voices into a microphone for pay - and playing fiddle and singing with songwriting greats like Joe Thompson, Kelly Keeling, and Jane Mangini of O'2L. Andrew Ross
Banjo, Mandolin, Vocals

Andrew Ross, originally from the Blue Ridge Mountains, now calls New York City his home. Andrew grew up surrounded by the bluegrass and country influence of his Grandparents and Uncle Les Sadelson, whose band, WindSong, toured with Kenny Rogers in the mid 80's. He picked up the guitar at an early age and taught himself banjo and mandolin after inheriting the family's extensive instrument collection. Andrew is a member of The Trans-Siberian Orchestra and can be seen on their North American tours every winter. Andrew can also be heard on recordings with Kelly Keeling, Joe Thompson, Jeremy Aggers, Casey Clark, the children's television series "Tarchin and Friends," and the upcoming album "Night Castle" with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. www.andrewmross.com.

Joe Thompson
Guitar, Vocals

Joe Thompson is a singer, songwriter, and recording artist living in the fairly large town that is known as New York City. Raised by fiercely loyal Texans in the breathtaking hills of Western Pennsylvania, Joe suffers a bit of a musical identity crisis - in that, he doesn't know if he's playing Honky Tonk Country, Blue Collar Classic Rock or Appalachian flecked folk... oftentimes within the same song. His debut release, The Hunting & The Hope, received warm reviews and found success on radio stations across these States United making its way onto The Americana Music Association's Chart. Joe can be seen, along with his very talented band, Joe Thompson & The Comfortable Catastrophe, at the varied Honky Tonks and watering holes of New York's music scene, including The Living Room, Rockwood Music Hall, Rodeo Bar, Banjo Jim's, The Bitter End, The Knitting Factory, Hank's Saloon, Pete's Candy Store, The Red Lion, and Lakeside Lounge, to name a few. Joe is currently working on a new album of original material to be released in the Spring of 2009. You can listen online at www.baldjoey.com. Cheers.
